An app can only do so much to get an unwilling partner to pitch in. Chore apps are theoretically supposed to solve the genuine problem of the housework gender divide. However, in practice, they tend to do the opposite. From promoting fairer distribution to papering over inequalities, Tanya Basu discusses how these supposedly helpful apps are struggling to undo centuries of sexism, resulting in women being forced to take on the additional burden of using technology to assign tasks.
