Some psychotherapeutic approaches are not only ineffective, but they’re also actively harmful. As we learn more about mental health and how to approach it, former treatments such as rebirthing and DARE have raised important questions about whether current methods are helpful, ineffective, or harmful to patients. However, finding the answer can be surprisingly tricky. From past to present practices, psychologists Yevgeny Botanov, Alexander Williams, and John Sakaluk examine the harm caused by some of these treatments and discuss the unfortunate reality that many practitioners lack the scientific training necessary to understand the methodological nuance of clinical trials.
